Hi hughstary.

Good idea the voltmeter across the battery to measure the voltage, for reference a charged battery will read 12 volts off load, may drop to 11 volts when starting engine and when charging will read 14.5 volts from a good alternator.
To check the regulator turn the headlights on and the voltage will drop a little but return to a charge voltage of 14.5 very quickly.
From previous posts on laguna's i would not disconnect the battery to measure the current as a small spike on reconnection can upset the sensitive electronics (and upset wallets).

Hope this helps.

Currently in Getafix's garage:
clean and shiny Scenic 2 1.6 16v Auto. (and a Fiat Campervan).
