Avantime Problem

Hi all!

Not posted on here for a long while - but here goes...

I'm currently in sunny (at the moment) Cornwall - drove down yesterday.

A few weeks ago my Avantime cut out on the motorway - "SERVICE" warning light, jolt as the engine cuts out and then restarts again. I pulled over and switched the engine off again; waited a couple of minutes and restarted. It cut out when the engine wasn't under any load - foot off throttle. I took it to my local garage and they plugged it in an O2 downstream (?) message had come up. They cleared it down.

All seemed fine.....Until yesterday when I was 3 miles from my holiday destination it cut out on a minor road (a corner & downhill!) under braking. No power steering or assisted brakes as the engine had totally stopped. I managed to safely stop the car; I waited a couple of minutes and it restarted fine. Again when the engine cut out my foot wasn't on the throttle. We took the car for a short drive this afternoon and it did it again....

I'm hoping both incidents are due to the same problem. Am I correct in thinking that there are two O2 sensors - one either side of the Cat? Also it sounds like my exhaust is a little loose (goes though lots of rubber mounts!) - might this cause a bad connection. I am going to look under the car tomorrow - is there anything I should be looking for? I shall have to call out the RAC I think but is an O2 sensor for the Avantime very expensive and would an RAC man be able to replace it - Pre-supposing the sensor is the problem of course?!

Cheers

Hugh

Re: Avantime Problem

Others will know a lot more than me but I would be surprised if your o2 sensor caused your car to stop in the way you describe, maybe slow down and be in limp home mode with your service light or whatever illuminated. If it was me I would be checking for corroded fuse holders, bad earths or other intermittant connections. I doubt if your o2 sensor is especialy expensive but you can search ebay to at least get an idea.

Best of luck

Re: Avantime Problem

Did you get it sorted out? I thought someone else would jump in to say I was talking rubbish! but no one else posted. Its not nice to break down on holiday, I know.

Best of luck with the car.

When you say it loses all power do you mean the engine just cuts out or does the car literally lose all electricity? Will it also not make any attempt to restart immediately or does it just spin over?

As above, an H02 sensor should not cause the vehicle to stall. It sounds heat related to me and i suspect a crank position sensor is at fault but as I'm on Tapatalk I can't see what version VS you have... 2.0T, 2.2dCi, 3.0?

Re: Avantime Problem

Hi guys thanks for your thoughts.

I took the car to a local garage - it turned out there was an air leak on the inlet manifold gasket and a pipe. The gasket was sealed (must get new one for next service) and the pipe was replaced.

I think the air leaks were due to a couple of replacement rear coils over the las 6 months or so - inlet manifold is moved to be removed.

Car drives fine now - obviously as the problem has worsened the performance has too.
