Smart Meters

My electric supplier has offered to supply a smart meter and as far as I can see the only advantage is that it saves me from supplying a metre reading on a monthly basis.

Is there more to it than meets the eye?

Would appreciate your views on this

Had one for over a year. Does stop the meter reading & the Nectar points for so doing in my case.
EVerybody WILL have them eventually, Gov't says so.
Because I have one, I could go for a Tariff which gives FREE Sunday electricity from 09:00 to 17:00. That's TWO full 60 degree washes, Sunday Dinner, 2KW Fan heater & the Dehumidifier.
Comms device packed up Dec 18th, I had to tell THEM, So only just got a bill. In house Display useful, tells me when the oven is up to temperature.

No réal loss then as I didn't have nectar points any way, so 1-0 for the meter

Re: Smart Meters

I think the smart meter is a bit of a con to be honest. The technology for reading meters was available around 30 years ago. It was used mainly for commercial premises and it collected the data via the long wave radio band - similar to that used for the international clock and switching street lighting. Whilst there may be benefits from being able to monitor your daily usage it also collects data regarding your life-style which can be used by either your supplier or sold on to others. You can buy energy consumption meters for home use but they don't pass on data.

I haven't been offered such in my area as yet but if given the choice I will be saying no until the system has been fully rolled out and is proven not only to be reliable but those operating it are proven to be trustworthy.

Caveat Emptor - Buyer Beware.
