Thanks, but I've just worked it out!

The bonnet is hinged in a parallelogram linkage. What's happened is that the front bar of that has, as the bonnet's gone over, bent itself against the pivot on the rear bar.

Now when the bonnet shuts, it rests against the bent bit of the front bar and can't go any further down.

I'll have to get new hinges, and ultimately sort the bonnet out, but it could have been much worse!

Now, if only I hadn't left my socket set at a friend's 300 miles away... d'oh!
