Yes you're correct the speedo doesn't need such an accurate signal, mine worked ok when the ABS light was on because of the magnetic ring on the bearing being knackered.
It did throw a wobbler and give a false reading at one point but most of the time it worked ok.
It could be the ABS unit itself has just decided to play up...a coincidence I know but who knows.
There's only so far you can go before you have to have the car plugged in to see if that throws any light on the problem.
