Starting problems - TDC or Immobiliser??

Hi, I have a Clio Grande 1.2 X reg with an intermitent starting problem. On more than one occasion the engine will turn over but not fire. This is regardless of whether the engine is hot, cold, been left overnight or been left for 5 mins. Breakdown told me it was an immobiliser problem, and Renault have told me (over the phone) it sounds like a TDC problem. I have read that a TDC is hard to diagnose on a diagnostic test, so am after some advice as to whether this sounds like an immobiliser problem or a TDC . Renault have quoted 121 for a diagnostic and refit of a TDC ?
Many thanks . . .
