That thread was specifically disengaging the auto and relying on the manual levers.

Which seems to be the issue here, that the manual side does not work.

If it's all working bar the manual handles, I'd suspect that but would be a guess.

The thread Dave pointed out does get you into the underseat junctions which is one place you need to check for problems.

The best way would be a decent diagnostic to identify the duff item/place
Be wary of dealers with handbrake problems. My experience and anecdotal seems to be a default position of replace the motor box at the back axle.
