Have now checked the switch. There is just under 12v on the contacts on the two ouitside pairs of female connectors.

On the switch there are 6 male contacts but only one pair appear to work, I was expecting two pairs ie to power the foglight bulb and possibly to power the dashboard indicator.

We ran power back directly from the light cluster with the rear lights on, this lit the dashbard foglamp indicator but eventually blew the fuse as I think the stoptail bulb is running at a higher wattage than the foglamp would've on it's own

I will try a replacement switch tommorrow as I have horrible feeling that when the 2nd hand engine was fitted, power was connected using the wrong polarity by the muppet who was helping me and the switch was "cooked" as a result.

Thanks again for the helpful tip
