Hi there Dave.

You have a couple of options available, you can either have a poke around the inside edges of the central trim strip(once the end bit have been removed), just to see if it loosens, and how it moves. You are right to be cautious.

Or alternatively, you can spend a bit of time with the masking tape & sheets of paper, and paint it in situ.
