Yup, the noise would be enough for me to want to get it looked at, and a significant loss of power certainly isn't normal.

I've never noticed the effect of the climate on the engine on either of my L2's (2.0 IDE and 1.9dCi) though on the previous 8v 2.0 L1 RXE, it did make a small but noticeable difference to foot-to-the floor acceleration (to the point where I'd turn off the air-con if I wanted a quick start from the lights.)

A lot of modern cars have the 'sense' to disengage the air-con compressor when at full throttle for exactly this reason. I'm not sure whether the L2 is one of them though.
