I thought perhaps there was a link between the electric handbrake fault and the battery? Is that not possible?
Yes but depends on what fault the parking brake has.

Can be internal in the motor... mega bucks
Can be wiring failure.... underfloor compartment under passenger seat has junctions for the ECP.
And is a favourite place for water to collect.
Not releasing could also be clutch switch failure.

One problem with the electric brakes is that many mechanics seem to believe the only fix is replace the motor.
Renault dealers also follow this line of thinking.
Currently in Dancingdad's garage:
Qashqai 1.6 spark driven, Kia Sedona 2.9 TDI, Scenic II 15DCi 2004 (SORN) not quite RIP.
