Correct Mr. TTT - Although it's far more than an anti-rattle spring because it forces the different parts of the calliper together into the correct geometry. The way the springs were fitted they were doing the opposite!
And thanks for finding that old post - this proves that I originally did the job correctly. I can only guess that shortly after 'someone' removed the callipers, for whatever reason, and then re-assembled them incorrectly because they've obviously been that way for some time.
I'm going to have to put my detective hat on and have a look back through my records but it's probably to late to sue whoever did it for the few hundred quid it's cost me to put right.
