Something you need to consider is that Ford speedos are notorious for over-reading (usually by at least 10%, sometimes more), so your indicated 2.5k @70mph (which seems very low, since my Scorpio 24v is geared for 28mph/1k rpm - according to the handbook), your Escort may actually only be travelling at 63mph whilst showing 2.5k rpm.
