Remove caliper
Make sure clean and pads are moving freely in it.
Turn back piston at least one turn, two or three better.
Replace and refit pads.
Pump foot pedal till brakes go hard.
Try handbrake.

Could be just auto adjust has slipped a little, actual movement of the pad is very little and movement via the handbrake not much bigger.

Is there an external spring on your caliper?
Not all have them but if the mountings are there, finding one in a scrapyard and fitting it will do no harm.
If the lever does not return fully, the piston will not ratchet forward
