I believe this is a recent change (within the past few months) as in March my garage said I could use my vehicle until the expiry of the original certificate, but since then I've have seen an article which had a link to the Governments website (that I have read too) which stipulates that if the vehicle FAILS its MOT if presented early, IT MUST NOT BE USED and will constitute an OFFENCE if driven on the road (unless going to a place of repair).
