I know moving the coloured rings won't sort out the incorrect positions but it does mean I know which sensor is which now. If the display shows a problem with a wheel | have to work out which wheel iti is. For example if the display shows Front left, i.e yellow ring. The yellow ring is on the Right rear, so that is the tyre I have to inflate to correct pressure.
The previous owner must have got the wheels mixed up when getting tyres fitted. he must have moved the rings in the mistaken belief this would put things right.
I could move the wheels to the correct locations but I would end up with unmatched pairs of tyres on each axle, This is not a big problem on my car (Lag II 1.6) since the pressures are the same front and rear. It could be a bit confusing if there is an out of balance of pressure warning (pair of wheels on same axle flashing on the dsiplay). In this case it would be easiest to check al four pressures.
