Hi Mike - essentially the activator unit is an accelerometer which measures sudden changes it the vehicles deceleration rate - it is usually based on either a small sprimg loaded pendulum or spring loaded ball bearing inside a tube. They don't always reset themselves and as there is no way of testing them renault always recommend replacement. I appreciate the cost issue but there is no guarantee a second hand one would work in an emergency - there may also be insurance implications.
