Thanks very much. I do use the cigar lighter socket from time to time for phone charging but hadn't connected this with the lighting problem. If your guy finds a fix I'd be really keen to hear about it. I have a temporary fix for the o/s tail lamp at the moment by putting a low wattage bulb into the rear fog light socket and then turning on the fog light.

I have taken the cover off the fusebox in the engine compartment but can't for the life of me work out how you're supposed to get at the fuses (if it's one of these that has blown).

Thanks again for the response. There are one or two other threads in the forum that suggest this is quite a common problem.
