Removing rear hub nut cover

What's the best way to remove the rear hub nut cover on my Clio Mk2, without damaging the cover. It's never been off before, so there's no gaps to get a lever in.

The Haynes just says use a large flat bladed screwdriver, tap and prise the cap out, but that seems to oversimplify.

Why don't they make caps with a small recess to allow you to get a lever in
