At this point, I should explain that I had already put the half of the bearing that fell out, back in (without quite knowing how it was supposed to mesh together) and replaced the drum and tightened the hub nut.
After doing this, the hub was tight to turn (before I took it off, it was very smooth and free), so I assumed I'd messed it up.
I've just been back out, taken the drum off, but the bearing didn't fall out, so I was thinking it's maybe re-constructed itself as a result of me tightening the hub nut. I've now put it back, but it's still tight to turn.
... so I assume it's not going to be any good. Or will it free up ?
