Post Scenic accelerating in fits and starts

Hello. I'm new to this site and know nothing at all about cars, but wondered whether anyone could help. I've got a 1.9 diesel Renault Scenic.

It's usually fine but occasionally it goes sort of juddery for five minutes at a time- when I put my foot on the accelerator it sort of goes in fits and starts. What it feels like (and this isn't based on any understanding of cars at all) is as if the diesel isn't getting where it's meant to be except in fits and starts, as if the diesel pipe thing is sort of dirty. Does that make any sense at all? I'm just trying to work out where the problem might be- I'm going to have to explain all this in French (I'm British but live in Belgium) and obviously my description is rubbish, so it would be useful to know what sort of thing it might be.

Many thanks in advance for any advice.
