I did remove most of the ridge with a small grindstone bit in a power drill. I tried to be careful not to run onto the braked area of the inside of the drum though.

No, I didn't check whether any of the pistons were leaking, but it was all dry in that area.

Rather think the noise is coming from the front now. In fact, I wonder if some of the noise was from the back, and that's now stopped.

The noise seems to occur just when the car's pulling up at the end of braking, not on first application of the brake pedal.

Anyway, I'm off to post another thread about removing the engine cover.
