HI Jacob - the coolant sensor is usually around the thermostat area. Due to modern electrical sytems being somewhat temperamental I would refrain from shorting out the cables to earth. The safest way is to disconnect the cable from the sensor and using a multi-meter measure the resistance of the sesnsor when cold and then when hot. When cold its resisteance should be high and lower when hot. Modern car electrics just don't take kindly to sudden voltage spikes.
