No such thing as a dumb stupid question ,thats how we all learn if you dont ask you can not learn,
the handbrake, pulls cables,these cables then pull arms that are attached to the rear brake shoes,the harder this is pulled the more force is applied to the brake shoe to drum clearance ,matter of preference on how tight you pull it ,some cars it can be fully applied with 3 notches,others it can be seven or more,you will feel the handbrake get harder to pull the more it is applied ,if your car holds on an incline at 4 notches then thats what it is ,as the brakes begin to wear it could become 5 notches,would say hold the button in to apply the hand brake as it causes premature wear on the ratchet,the ratchet is there to stop the hand brake being released, without pressing the button its a safety measure Keep asking questions ,the more you ask the more you will be able to do
