I had welding done on my Nissan Almera which had a coded key so the battery was not supposed to be disconnected. The chap that did it only disconnected the alternator as this was the only part likely to be damaged. Something to do with diodes in the rectifier.
Hopefully someone more knowledgable about welding will confirm or refute this as it may mean that you can go ahead as long as the alternator is isolated.
