We just bought a 53 Reg Scenic on Friday and are having the exact same fault! We had no choice but to take it to the Renault garage (after calling the RAC to get us there) as the battery had just drained completely due to the fan, windscreen wipers and lights not turning off after forcing it to stall to turn off.
Anyway the problem is the UPC unit (the multi function timing unit) which shorted out due to water regression. We think the valet guy from the garage we bought the car from used a pressure hose to clean the underside of the car/engine area and this has caused the problem. Luckily the garage are admitting to this and are going to cover the very costly bill of £362!!!!
Hope you get your car sorted out and don't have to pay as much as this.
362 reasons not to use a pressure hose on cars me thinks
