Electronic dipstick. The little set of "O"s that appear on your dashboard when you first turn the ignition on (unless yours says " oil ok", in which case try pressing the display button on the stalk).

Sounds like wiring to me too - have the garage tried to read any fault codes from the ECU ? Presumably if it was something serious (or at least something the ECU knows about), you'll get the "toxic fume" light appear on your dashboard as well as the lights flickering?
