Tried it... on a snow covered car park in December just to see what would happen. The system simply won't activate if the car is going above a certain speed.

The one thing that really worries me about the electronic parking brake is exactly what you're supposed to do in the highly unlikely (but not impossible) event of a complete failure of the hydraulic braking system, or an ABS fault that locks out the conventional brakes completely (I don't know if modern systems can do this, but I believe some earlier ABS systems did exactly that if the computer locked up.) With a manual transmission, I suppose you can drop down to a very low gear and hope that engine braking brings you to a halt in time, but with an auto box, you're probably left to find out first-hand whether or not a five star Euro-NCAP rating is worth the paper it's written on.
