Not to sure but one thing I've picked up on the forums is that it's a better bet to get a 16v engine rather than an 8v as I believe the 8v have considerably more problems than the 16v. Your on the right track, at least.
Always check the rear arches on Laguna's as that's where the rust seems to creep through first. Other than that, I would say check all the things that you check on any second hand car that you would be purchasing.
