That old unit may be repairable, as it's already junk you have little to lose!
Clean the circuit board thoroughly with warm water and a paintbrush with a little washing up liquid on it, rinse thoroughly and dry well with compressed air/hairdryer, inspect through a magnifying glass for any of the component legs or board tracks corroded through. pay particular attention to the three infrared receivers standing up at one end, it is very difficult to see under the plastic support they fit in. I desolder them to clean/inspect underneath, but then I am an electrician! If anything has corroded through you will need an electronics expert to replace them.
Otherwise when it's thoroughly dried out refit it and give it a try.
