MYSTERIOUS CLIO NOISE.......
I have a MK1 1995 Clio 1.4 RT with 94k which I use about 3 times a week around London. In the last 6 months I have noticed on motorway trips that my CLio starts making a mysterious noise if I really push it after a certain amount of time.
If I do some serious overtaking the noise appears after about 20-30 minutes, sometimes sooner, sometimes later. But I'd say on average after 45 minutes of cruising at 80-90 mph it appears.
BUT - the noise goes away if I slow down to 65-70 mph. Yesterday when the noise appeared I slowed down to 70 and the noise went away but at 71 mph the noise appears again. BUT if I stay at 70 mph for 15 minutes or so and then start increasing speed gradually to 80 mph - the noise doesn't come back.
The noise itself sounds rotational and is a combination of what sounds like road noise when on a solid rough surfaced road (such as concrete slab carriageway) and metallic rotational sound, not grinding but something not sounding quite right or louder than it should be. It sounds as if it is coming from the left front side of the car.
Last time the noise appeared I stopped at services and gave it a good inspection which didn't point any suspicions at anything. When we set off the noise was gone.
I haven't noticed this noise at slow speed 20-70 mph or on cornering at any speed. I have good tyres, at correct pressures, which have recently been balanced.
