Being a new member, i was hoping someone could tell me if there are any known problems with the gearbox that Renault fit in to the Twingo 1.2 GT TCE.

My new Twingo has only done currently 1200 miles and has what can be described as a relase bearing noise while the gearbox is under load, as soon as the clutch is depressed, the noise goes away only to return when the clutch is reengaged, It has been in to my local dealer but at the moment they cannot find the problem!!!!:steam:

Ottoman thanks again for all your help, the noise is there all the time can hear it more in 3rd 4th and 5th and speed wise more audible about 50mph, the best way to describe the noise is like an engine tappet noise but goes away when the clutch is depressed and comes back as soon as the clutch is engaged.

I do work in the automotive trade for unipart and do speak to a lot of mechanics every day, the opinion of it from one of them is that it sounds like a input shaft.

I had a spin in the Twingo a Gt like yours Twingojsh and no noise as you describe.

There was a slight click when using the brake or clutch pedals on intial application, I think it was the pedal controls due to the cars conversion from left to right hand drive.

Other than that no noises and a good car to drive, The 1.2 low pressure turbo really suits the Twingo as it suits the Clio III which I have driven extensively and not heard any noises as you have on your Twingo

Thanks for the info ottoman, i thought that would be the case, i do remember in the last posts (my twingo has a noise) that a fellow forum member posted to say that they had a twingo gt and no noise heard from theirs.

In that respect it would seem that mine does have a fault and does need to be sorted out, hopefully soon!

Oh a quick add on, could you tell me how many miles the one that you drove had done and how old it was?

Miles now about 2,000 from memory(not seeing the car for a week my memory slightly jaded), reported it first to sales dept within the first 3 weeks of owning and around 200 miles, the noise was there on the 1st day when the car had 7 miles on it(1/3/08).

Went in to the dealer for one day after 800 ish miles and was told by the RTE to wait until 1,700 miles, which is why the car is now there with them after around 2,000

A little tip I always take a note of the recorded miles when leaving a car at a Dealers/workshop.

One car I had was there for 3 weeks and they said they had test driven the car extensively in that time and one of their Tec's had used it daily overnight etc 4 extra miles was showing on the clock .

Ok a quick update on the situation so far, went to the dealer yesterday (16/4/08) and met the senior aftersales manager, did a back to back demo again but with another Twingo (1.2 Gt 1,907 miles 08 plate), no noise on theirs but noise on my which he heard.

He has now admitted a noise exists and currently my poor twingo is undergoing an operation to have its gearbox removed and a possible replacement clutch release bearing
to be fitted in the best case. Worst case could be replacement box altogether as they are in constant contact in the removal process with the Renault tech dept and the senior tech guy from the dealer! Reason for that is that they think as a outside possibility of a input shaft noise.

At the end of the day its nice to have a positive post to put on this forum rather than lots of negatives that i have put on so far

Good news Twingojsh.

Lets hope they get to the bottom of the problem.

Check the car over very carefully when you get it back.

Do not take the car back if you are not happy with the work carried out, Go out in a test drive with an RTE .

Any marks or damage do not take the car back until it is rectified and report it to Renault Customer Services.

Have you a contact name at RCS who has being dealing with your problem ?

Well i'd like to think that the end of the matter is in sight now, all i hope is that the operation that is underway at the moment is going to solve the problem and i dont have to see them anymore until routine servicing! :d

But we will have to wait and see what the guys can do, either from a replacement release bearing or a new gearbox whatever they find:d

My only experience with dealing with Renault UK was pretty much a waste of time. They told me that the dealer network (i.e the servicing departments) were the experts. As they seem to know diddly squat, I can only conclude that there is no such thing as technical expertise within the Renault UK organisation.

Hi twigojsh

It was regarding the well publicised dash problem on Lagunas. Renault UK advised me to speak with my local dealer, which I had already done to no effect, hence my comments.
I still have a trip computer reading in metric units, as I am loathe to spend the £850+ to get it fixed.

Well if the problem was well publicised and as you say in other posts, that Watchdog had got hold of the problem, how come you face a bill of £850 to get it sorted?

The last Renault problem that Watchdog got hold of was the Clio 2 bonnet catch, which renault actually sent out recall notices for, as i used to own a clio that was sent a recall notice, i never heard anything about lagunas!

Hi all forum users, another update on the ongoing situation with my Twingo, spoke to the senior aftersales guy on friday and some rather interesting news has been given to me.

The news was that the gearbox was out the car and the RTE had inspected both the release bearing and the input shaft and bearing, both found to be totally fine, the interesting news came in the shape of that that the clutch is the suspected root of the problem.

On the Clutch plate itself it has 4 springs, 2 of which are loose! quite a worry as the car has only done 2,00 miles, anyhoo the dealer has now ordered another clutch (disc and plate) and will inspect once arrives with them(hopefully 21/4/08 if not before), once the inspection has been carried out by the RTE and he is happy to say that is ok, the task of reassembly and get the pocket rocket back on its rightful place, on the road giving me and my partner some good times on our travels

Hello again, another update for you all, and one which is making the plot thicken even further!

Dealer received replacement clutch from Renault early hours of today (23/4/08)and found that the replacement part is exactly the same as the one that has come out of the car i.e 2 springs out of 4 are loose. Contact was made to Renault Technical to inform them of the findings and the the answer from them now is to replace the whole gearbox assembly!:( :(

Replacement gearbox has been ordered and now have to await delivery, could be up to five days to receive it.

However there is a silver lining to the whole affair, the sales manager who has been involved in the matter saw the car on the ramp at the service dept earlier and noticed the dent (courtesy of my neighbours recycling bin that got blown over in the winds in march)and has said that he will get in removed by his Paintless dent removal guy, at no cost to myself, I think that is a good gesture in the circumstances.:) :) :)

If only that were the case, the reason for the replacement clutch being ordered was to compare against the one that came out the car, from what they told me the new replacement part is the same (including loose springs).

The dealer then contacted Renault Technical and informed them of the findings and then requested that the dealer to order a replacement gearbox assembly!  :(

I'm sure that if Lag owners encountered this problem while their vehicles were still in the warranty period, Renault would have replaced the dash FoC.
In my case (and reading between the lines for others who have had the problem) the fault occurred when the manufacturers warranty had expired. Don't know what the situation would be with 3rd party extended warranties.

:d :d :d

Finally some good news to all forum users, I have now been reunited with my Twingo gt after almost 4 weeks of it being at the poorly car clinic, picked it up tonight 29/4/08 and pleased to report that all is well!

Drives fine and no longer has any undue noise from the gearbox area, but as they have had to replace the gearbox and the clutch release bearing i am glad to hear it hasn't.

Anyhoo now i have the car back i can start to enjoy it again for proper now, just in the drive home from the dealer to home(about 15 miles) my month long Mardi face evaporated into a big beaming grin as it flew along dual carriageway and spat me out of roundabouts:devil:

Hello Lag, Thanks for the question posted, The Twingo is fine and has been no further problem regarding the Gearbox and Mechanical.:d :d

The only problem the Car did have was a minor indiscretion with a BMW while sat still in a queue of traffic!!!!! Result was a replacement rear bumper and a repair to the Bootlid, :steam: :steam:
