As with any type of tool, there are places where a specific type is needed. Or at least very nice to have.
Without a ratchet ring, auxiliary belt pulleys are a nightmare on the Kia and bad enough with one (and a T50 torx bit)

And of course, with the way that modern cars are assembled from sub assemblies, bolts that are perfectly suited to a socket with the engine out become only accessible by a midget contortionist once the engine is in the bodyshell. And then only if they have the right spanner with just the right amount of offset.
