Having a squint in through the wheels to check the brakes is not a good method of checking. Ideally you need to renove the wheels for a closer look. Whilst the outer surface of the disc may appear OK the back may be in a very poor condition. You cannot judge the wear of a disc by checking the lip on the outer edge as the lip will increase due to corrosion. Thickness of the disc should be checked on at least 4 locations around the surface off the disc/

Use a suitable measuring tool such a vernier gauge or micrometer for accurate measuring. A cheap micrometer can be bought for as little as 7-00 less than the price of a disc.
