Doing a multi-meter test of the battery won't test its ability to turn a starter motor - it's ok for testing the alternator but can't test for duration of output. If a car has a good battery and the electrics are in good order short runs shouldn't make much difference - because if that was the case many little old ladies would be left by the roadside. I have a 1.9 diesel (kept outdoors in all weathers) which I only use 3-4 times a week for journeys of around 2-5 miles and I have no starting problems. As said earlier get the battery load tested.
