I'm with DancingDad, had exactly this happen on the old Ford. The reason for the ABS error is because the battery Voltage is too low, the ABS gubbins is electrically powered, and needs some power too so if there's not enough Voltage to make sure it works then it's an ABS fail.
The fault was rotten alternator leads (albeit intermittently) so sometimes Battery was not getting charged enough, and lit the ABS warning lights.
Battery needs a charger on it before you try it again.
