Re: Buying an Espace Initiale 2.2dCi - what to look out for?

Hi I've got a 2.2dci 55 reg with 145,000 miles. Like anything if you buy a nice one and look after it, then it will be fine. I would say check the normal things, Service history, make sure oil has been changed regularly, cam belt etc etc. I would say especially the Cam belt as most will now be on there second change. They are expensive if done at a garage (I've been quoted 1200) but if you can wangle a spanner and not afraid to have a go it can be done at home. I did mine 6 months ago and parts cost was about 200 ( you have to drill a hole in the inner wing to remove pulley bolt, don't be scared off just drill it, there are already other holes nearby. They are big and heavy so check brake etc, as normal nothing serious to change but could be a bargaining tool if they are worn. Rear springs are prone to break, sometimes one side of the rear looks slightly lower, sign of a broken spring. Again easy job but is an MOT failure.
I think one of the main things that kill the 2.2DCI is if you get a problem with the injectors, they are a pig to get out and need special hydraulic tools to remove them. Local garage told me they had one in and a specialist guy came to remove the injectors, put 2 tons of pressure on one of them and it didn't move and then charged them 200 per injector for the pleasure.

Good luck, Mark.
