Hi lag - Thanks for the warm welcome!

So (if I'm thinking it's the machine i think it is) it's done on a machine with a cutting blade which moves back and forth while the metal being cut is slowly moved along right? (did engineering years ago)

Oh heck, didn't realise it was going to be this painful to fix the poorly car..

So how do I know if it needs doing? - Is it a certainty that it will need doing or is there a tell tale sign i should look for?

Luckily at the moment we got the 2nd car to rely on so i suppose i could start dismantling the engine block now to take a peek (not that i want to as i don't know where to start, what fluids need draining, what things need disconnecting etc)...

Yes I have a haynes manual - I've lent it to the neighbours pal so he can familiarise himself with the car before they start to perform their repairs on it..

Thanks for your help and advice!
