Hi stef - very good point - the battery connection via the cigatette lighter port only works if the lighter is live and on many cars this is only when the ignition is switched on. Should the lighter socket be duff or dirty you may not find out if the connection is good until you disconnect the battery - then it's too late. This may not work on keycard ignition systems. I use a set of lightweight cables with crocodile clips and an old battery. Connect the negative to the engine and the positive to the battery cable. If you take care you shouldn't loose conection.
