did as you said (much to the dismay of my mechanic friend), and hey presto, door opened after an hour or so of fiddling. Breaking the "black plastic box" did the trick. Putting new lock in wasn't easy. For anyone else trying this, found it worked best when "push rod" from the outside handle was detached from handle first and and then re-attached when handle offered up to door from the outside....
