Tried out Clio141 suggestion using the card to manipulate the child lock, no luck. Also tried out biff's suggestion using a piece of wire, still no luck. Last resort was remove the door card, tricky is right but managed. After a while got the door card off, poked around a bit and there the fault was. When the exterior handle is pulled it is linked to what looks to be a treaded bar with a little metal clip and a plastic stud, via an eyelet moulded into the handle mechanism. The little plastic stud had partially broken and slipped out of the eyelet. After about 30 minutes of fiddling around I managed to get the stud relocated and the handle is now back working perfectly.
Will go to my Renault dealer early in the New Year and get a replacement stub, it’s a tiny piece of plastic, am sure it will cost pence. Dreading having to remove the door card again though…it really is tricky to remove, and to replace is not too handy either.
