I have had the same problem with my 2000 model too. What i had to do in the end was get underneath the car with a long thin bar and push the catches open. Was a little tricky and took a bit of time but got the catches to release the bonnet.
Once i got the bonnet open i then took the catches out, gave them a good clean and re-greased them. Seemed to work fine for a year until it was getting a little difficult again, so what i now do is clean and re-grease every couple of months, especially when the weather starts to change.
Had no problems since. Hope this helps
