Induction Filter and ram-air pipes on Espace IV

A while back I decided to go a bit mad and uprate the air filter in my petrol/LPG 2.0T Espace. I also decided that I didn't want to go down the usual boring K&N panel filter route.

First up was to find a foam filter (for maximum flow) that would fit inside the existing air box. I planned on adding ram-air type pipes hence not having the filter out of the box and fed with cool air and seperated from the warm engine bay. I had to buy a suitable plumbing/drainage bend to connect the filter's neck to the existing Espace piping behind the airbox.

Then, using a couple of fish pond pipe couplers and some 2" flexible pond piping (not the crappy squashy aluminium stuff), I fed 2 pipes down right behind the front grille where they were fixed with brackets. These were terminated with some bass ports like you get on subwoofer boxes.
It sounds simple reading through this but it did take a few hours and cost about 50-ish.

The end result was the car is definitely more responsive at low throttle, with just a hint of induction roar as the system is boxed in. At speeds up to 70mph, the car pulls better than before (the original paper filter was quite clean when removed). At speeds of 80mph (on a private road of course), the car just pulls and pulls and feels like it's got a small storm-force tailwind behind it.

I didn't take any power readings beforehand, but it feels like it's gained about 5-10bhp up to 70mph, then above it feels more like 20+! This is most likely due to the ram-air effect taking place and is like a little supercharger is kicking in. It's a shame it doesn't kick in at a slightly slower speed so I can use it more often on the road say for safely overtaking on A/B roads etc. Perhaps if I'd have been able to fit twin 3" pipes then it would've made a difference lower down, but the 2" pipes were hard enough to get in.

Here's a few pics of the bits. I forgot to take one of it fitted so may add one at some point.

Perhaps a Re-Map could bring your Torque in Lower down & take full advantage of the improved breathing?
I do however appreciate It's a Petrol engine.

As it happens...

I emailed a remapping company in Newquay a few months back (Celtic Tuning) and they reckon that on a standard 2.0T, they can take it up to about 225bhp!!! They apparently don't just do a standard off-the-shelf remap like most do. Everyone else is saying about 197bhp can be achieved (standard is about 167 although my car's done 170,000 miles so it's probably a bit less now ).
I've just had a cheaper Christmas offer come through but I cant afford that this year.
When my boat comes in, I might see if the family want to have a few days holiday in Newquay, and while I'm there...

This reminds me of when i made and enclosed filter housing out of a rain hopper, and then used drain pipe and bends for the cold air feed :P
