Our Scenic, with the 1.6 8V engine, has had 2 HG failures. The first was at about 3 years old, just out of warranty. Renault paid for most of the cost, and as it included a cambelt change it saved having to do that job at a later date.
Cost about £600, from memory, when it went the 2nd time (Renault dealer did the repair).
There must be something wrong with the design of this engine if it's quite common. Has anyone worked out what the problem is? I'm assuming that if it's happened twice, it will happen a third time.
Is there any way to prevent it happening again? Is there anyway to know if it's about to happen again?
In both cases the heater stopped working, and that was the first sign of problem, followed by eating the coolant (out the exhaust).
