Worst and best cheap cars?

This is something that would interest me (a student and first car owner) a lot - and would be helpful for anyone attempting their first feeble steps in the world of motoring:

Which cars are the worst/best in the following price categories?
  • Up to 1200 Euros (approx. 900)
  • 1200 - 2000 Euros (approx. 900 - 1500)
  • 2000 - 3000 Euros (approx. 1500 - 2250)

I would not have a clue other than I'm told Japs are the most reliable. Thought I did well on my 96 Megane 1.4 when I got it for 1000 Euros but it was without an NCT (or MOT) and I've now already spent about 500 Euros in trying to fix an ongoing emissions problem...I hope I can get it fixed though, as I like its roominess and the 1.4 engine (I'd hate to have a Nissan Micra or worse, a Fiat Punto), which, I still think is rare at that price. Am I right? Or wrong?
