At least I HOPE it's sorted! Today I bit the financial bullet and paid my usual workshop to pull the sump off and have a good look-see. I was hoping to find a partially blocked siphon or similar. In the event they didn't find much of note, just traces of the usual sludge, but they cleaned and flushed it all carefully before putting it back.
Then they put a new
filter on it, and filled it with fresh semi-synthetic 10-40.
And it seems to have done the job. I went for a longish run after I picked it up, making sure it was well up to temperature, and seeking out opportunities for stop-start traffic and drag starts and so on! And there was not a flicker out of the
My personal theory is that the last owner had put crap
in, and/or not bothered to change the filter. We may never know.
