The front disc caliper pistons can be retracted using the method you suggest but try to open the bleed screw to allow the fluid to escape rather than force it back through the system as ABS doesn't always take kindly to fluid travelling the wrong way. A flexi-hose barke clamp also helps.

On rear discs the procedure is different depending on model, handbrake type, etc.

What type of rear brakes do you have and is the handbrake the electronic type?

A proper rewind tool can be bought form Europarts form as little as 15-00.
