Of the 50 odd cars I have owned over the years the best and also the worst must be RENAULT!
Best would be (but only by a whisker) a Renault 30.
Loads of room for the family. Smooth and comfortable. Good load carrier (once carried a Pugeot 102 Engine and box in the back with all the family - five of us - from Kent to West London with the rear mud flaps dragging on the road). Never had any serious problems with it. Beautiful engine. Would probably still have that one if it hadn't been written off following an accident (with a French registered R5). Had the front driver side suspension pushed hard back into the rear of the wheel arch. The R5 only lost its front bumper!
Thing was, I had been out of work for 6 months and was on my way to a job interview.
My current Laguna would come a close second to the R30 for comfort, power and pure driving pleasure.
Worst pile of c£@& ever was a two owner low milage (18,000 if I remember correctly) R5. I soon found out why it was low miles (it spent more time in the garage being repaired than it did on the road being used). It failed MOT on rusty brake pipes so I decided to replace them with copper. A couple of friends in the motor trade had set up business so I borrowed their lift to get underneath. They were not pleased as the job took two days - you have never seen so much brake pipe on such a small car. Front to back and then back to front and then round the petrol tank a couple of times.
I must have used most of a 30m
of pipe. And every nut and bolt was seized solid and needed cutting off.
And that was only one of many problems that ranged from electrical to carburation. It was a nightmare. Couldn't wait to get rid of it.
