For a lag2 derv:-
1)You want an 03 at least, or get one that's had the intercooler replaced with the uprated strappy version, as 02s and before will all split if they haven't already. A split IC will cause lumpy acceleration around 2k revs and could produce a descernable hiss
2)Aircon (obviously)
3)Front windows no squeaks, or else regulator replacement
4)Tyre pressure monitors, accurate or are they deactivated? Some can be a pain
5)Rear suspension bushes: on an 02 or 03 will probably be split and need replacing if they've not been already
6)Cambelt at 72
7)The EGR pipework should not be the narrow cast iron variety, also try and make sure the EGR is clean - if you can't be sure get them to take it out and clean it. Will need doing every 18k miles or so
8)Dervs with an 18k service interval should have had more regular oil changes than this, 9 or 6 even or the turbo is prone to wear and could fail. Check the turbo history as failure is a common and expensive problem. Renault will contribute (yellow OTS) if car is under 90k miles and less than 5 years old with full main dealer SH so
9)Get an 03 or newer with less than 90k and full SH
10)Check the headlamp washers on the xenon headlamp variety as they are prone to sticking up which is a bumper off job for replacement

I think that's the common faults for the derv. 1.9 has a bit better economy, 2.2 has a bit better poke. If you can get a derv with all those sorted it should be sweet. I'd be tempted to factor in a turbo overhaul though if it doesn't qualify for the YOTS. Turbo technics will replace seals and bearings for 200 notes but its a couple of days work, meaning you've got the car off the road for that time plus you've got to get the turbo off and to them, or else they might charge more to remove and refit it for you... ?

The non-engine related points should relate to the petrol model too!
