Got it sorted at last, you was on the right track lagdti. A tow bar had been fitted and removed. two sets of wiring for the caravan had been simply cut off and left to collect salt and spray etc, this caused it to short and cause the problems. eventualy the side lights came on when i braked, the high pitch sound was the audible warning device that you have to have when tow bars are fitted. The wiring left behing was causing the problems.
